Sen. Cantwell Chairs Her First SBC Hearing

March 5, 2014

pic-cantwellThis week’s U.S. Senate Small Business Committee (the “Committee”) markup* on the nomination of Ms. Maria Contreras-Sweet is the first full committee hearing chaired by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). Last month, Sen. Cantwell replaced Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who became Chair of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The foregoing changes were set in motion by the nomination and confirmation by the full Senate of former Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), who became the new U.S. Ambassador to China.

Sen. Cantwell’s first act as incoming chair is to convene a hearing to approve the nomination of Ms. Contreras-Sweet as the next SBA Administrator. After the Committee’s expected approval, Ms. Contreras-Sweet’s nomination will go the full Senate for a final vote and confirmation. Sen. Cantwell has been a champion for many small business issues, including being a strong advocate for improving small business’s access to capital.

* Prior to the vote, the Committee recessed to allow members to attend to Senate floor votes and then reconvened off the Senate floor where the vote was unanimous to report the nomination to the full Senate.
