Washington, D.C. — On Monday, June 10, Richard Fleming, CEO & Founder of State Tax Group, LLC in Farmers Branch, Texas was recognized as a finalist for the National Small Business Association’s 2019 Lewis Shattuck Small Business Advocate of the Year Award. The honor was given in conjunction with NSBA’s annual event, the Washington Presentation, and recognizes small-business owners who go above and beyond in advocating for policies to improve America’s small-business community.

“Not only has Richard Fleming managed to usher his company through impressive growth, he has been an active voice pushing for policies that help all small businesses—not just his,” stated NSBA President and CEO Todd McCracken. “His expertise and knowledge of tax law has uniquely positioned him to affect change to for the betterment of America’s small businesses.”

Fleming has made countless trips to Austin to meet with lawmakers and has engaged lawmakers repeatedly on key tax issues. Fleming was appointed to the Texas State Comptroller’s Taxpayer Advisory Group where he meets quarterly to discuss proposed tax policy and provide input on what those proposals would mean for small business. He was instrumental in the fight against a transgender “bathroom bill” which mirrored the North Carolina bill and cost that state an estimated loss of over $500 million – no such law has passed in Texas.

In addition to honoring Fleming, NSBA recognized Calvin Mills, Jr., of CMC Technology Solutions and SLT Technology, Inc in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as the overall award winner and finalists Joyonna Gamble-George of SciX, LLC in Lutz, Florida and Brian Morales of Pro-Cal Electrical Contracting in Vista, California.

“Richard’s commitment to advocacy and his community is commendable,” stated NSBA Board Chair Sharon Toerek of Toerek Law. “The importance of advocacy is perfectly illustrated by the successes he has had in policymaking in Texas, and I applaud his efforts.”
