Washington, D.C. — NSBA has announced the winners for the 2019 Lewis Shattuck Small Business Advocate of the Year Award. The award winners were recognized during NSBA’s Annual Advocate of the Year Award Luncheon on Monday, June 10, with Calvin Mills, Jr., CEO of CMC Technology Solutions and SLT Technology, Inc in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as the overall winner.
“I am honored to recognize this year’s outstanding award winners for their myriad efforts which have improved the small-business climate in their communities and beyond,” stated NSBA President and CEO Todd McCracken. “Each of these small-business owners represents not just the entrepreneurial spirit that makes our country thrive, they are selfless advocates committed to helping the entrepreneurs and small-business leaders of future generations.”
In addition to running two successful companies, Mills has been an outspoken advocate for small business and has served on a variety of boards in his community, state and nationally. His advocacy has resulted in improvements in small-business government contracting, and he has helped craft legislative language to offer tax credits for small-business investment.
NSBA also recognized the following small-business owners for their excellence in advocating on small-business issues:
- Richard Fleming, CEO & Founder of State Tax Group, LLC in Farmers Branch, Texas;
- Joyonna Gamble-George, COO and Chief Scientific Officer for SciX, LLC in Lutz, Florida;
- Brian Morales, President of Pro-Cal Electrical Contracting in Vista, California
“Every small business owner knows that success requires enormous amounts of determination, energy and, the most precious commodity of all, time. So, when you consider the additional resources any business owner devotes to advocacy work, it’s impressive, “ said NSBA Board Chair Sharon Toerek of Toerek Law. “This year’s honorees make it look effortless. I applaud their efforts, their time and their passion for these issues, and as a small-business owner myself, I thank them for everything they’re doing.”
The award recognizes a commitment to small-business advocacy above and beyond policies that specifically impact their own business or industry.
