NSBA Applauds Introduction of STRONGER Patents ActJuly 11, 2019
On June 10, 2019, NSBA President and CEO Todd McCracken joined the bipartisan, bicameral cosponsors of the STRONGER Patents Act, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) at the Capitol in support of legislation that will make it easier and more affordable for patent holders to enforce their patents.
The STRONGER Patents Act was reintroduced on July 10 and will make many important reforms to the current U.S. patent system. Below is a statement from McCracken in support of the STRONGER Patents Act.
“Patent protections are particularly important for small businesses, which operate on much smaller margins and often rely more heavily on their intellectual property for revenue than large firms. Since the passage of the America Invents Act several years back, it has become more and more difficult for America’s small businesses and independent inventors to protect their intellectual property. The STRONGER Patents Act takes critical steps forward in addressing this issue.
“A 2018 ranking of national patent systems found that the U.S. has slipped to number 12 in the world, after having been ranked number one in prior rankings. This is detrimental not only for innovators but for the U.S. workforce and for key American industries, which depend heavily on strong patent protections.
“Patent rights and protections are extremely important to small firms: according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses produce 16 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms, which has a direct correlation with job growth.
“The reforms in the STRONGER Patents Act will help boost U.S. competitiveness and strengthen property rights protections for inventors, small businesses, and other patent owners. I applaud Sen. Coons and Rep. Stivers for their attention to this critical issue, as well as their efforts to work on bicameral, bipartisan solutions—something we could use more of on Capitol Hill.”
