2013 Washington Presentation Wrap-Up

Obama panel groupEarlier this week, NSBA held its annual Small Business Washington Presentation in Washington, D.C. Small-business owners from across the country gathered for the two-day event where they networked with one another, met with lawmakers and attended a White House Briefing.

The event kicked off with the keynote luncheon featuring the Honorable Jim Nussle, former Chair of the House Budget Committee and Director of the Office of Management and Budget. During the luncheon, NSBA announced Raymond M. Arth, President of Phoenix Products, Inc. in Avon Lake, Ohio as the 2013 Lew Shattuck Small Business Advocate of the Year, alongside four finalists: Dr. Raymond Jardine, Jr. of Native Hawaiian Veterans, LLC, Michael Canty of Alloy Bellows & Precision Welding, Inc., Socorro Harvey of NVision Solutions and John Hexter of Hexter Consulting.

Following the luncheon, the NSBA delegation attended a White House Briefing where President Barack Obama spoke to the group and held a lively question-and-answer session. Additionally, several top advisors spoke to the group, including: Alan Krueger, Todd Park, Marie Johns, Brian Deese and Boris Bershteyn.

The next day, the delegation headed to the Capitol for the Congressional Breakfast where they heard from Reps. Tom Rice (R-S.C.), Scott Tipton (R-Colo.), Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), Bill Owens (D-N.Y.) and Sens. Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), and Al Franken (D-Minn.).

Following the breakfast, the delegation set out for lobbying visits with their lawmakers’ offices where they discussed issues ranging from access to capital and immigration reform, to deficit reduction and regulatory restraint.
